Al Norman was born in Toronto and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. After graduating as an
Industrial Technician with honours from Cambrian College, and a short employment with the
provincial government, he pursued his engineering degree at Queen's University.
Al began his career as an Industrial Engineer with Lee Jeans of Canada, then moved to GWG in Edmonton. When GWG merged with Levi Strauss, Al returned to Ontario and spent the next decade working with a number of sleep-wear manufacturers; filling roles as Industrial Engineer, Engineering Manager and Plant Manager.
Al transitioned into the metal stamping industry to develop and combine Human Resources Management and Engineering skills, and then moved his family to Regina to accept the challenges of serving as an Industrial Technology Advisor in National Research Council's (NRC) Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP).
Throughout his career, Al has taken various courses, particularly while in the Industrial Technology Advisor position, attaining half of the credits toward a Masters of Applied Science with the Univeristy of Regina before the program was discontinued. Along with the technical training, Al has attained certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute.
This professional engineer uses his Human Resources techniques to coach people toward Lean business development and operations; the result is more efficient and effective operation of small and medium sized businesses; betterment of the industries and communities to which he is committed; and promotion of free enterprise.
Active in his community, Al has sat on a community assoc., Regina's Roundtable on Solid Waste Management, Westhill Park Steering Committee, is the Vice President of Regina West Zone board, Regina's Green Ribbon Community Climate Change Committee, a mentor with the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF), a judge at the Canada Wide Science Fair (1996 and 2002) and is the Past President of West Zone Taekwon Do.
As a mentor with CYBF, Al's protege', Jessica Williamson, of Hoopla Clothing in Moose Jaw, has won the 2008 Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX award as Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Moose Jaw Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur for 2009 and 2009 CYBF Best Business Award for the Central Prairies. Al has won 2009 CFBY Central Prairies Outstanding Mentor Award.
